Customs Licensing Charges Amendment 2024

✦ Plain-English Summary

# Customs Licensing Charges Amendment 2024 ## What it does This updates the fees that businesses pay to operate customs storage depots (warehouses that handle imported goods). The bill sets new charge amounts for getting and renewing these licenses, with a discount available for smaller operations. ## Why it matters If you run a business importing goods, this directly affects your licensing costs. The government is also giving small depot operators a price break if they handle fewer than 300 shipments a year, which could ease the burden on smaller importers and logistics providers. ## Key details - **Standard depot license fee**: $4,000 per year (up from the previous rate), though the government can raise this to $6,000 if needed - **Discount for low-volume depots**: If your facility handled fewer than 300 transactions in the previous 12 months, you pay only $1,500 instead of $4,000 ($2,250 if the higher rate is prescribed) - **Pro-rata charges**: If you get a new license mid-year, you only pay for the remaining days in that financial year, calculated by formula

Official Description

Introduced with the Customs Amendment (Strengthening and Modernising Licensing and Other Measures) Bill 2024, the bill amends the Customs Licensing Charges Act 1997 to align licence renewal payment requirements and calculations across the licensing regime for customs brokers, depots and warehouses; and rectify deficiencies found in calculating depot licence renewal fees.
